When to Get a New Accountant for Your Home Business
Establishing your home business requires keeping up to date financial records and a realistic business budget. Once tax season arrives, you do not want to be overstressed because of an unorganized financial mess. Hiring an accountant to help you sort through your home business finances is always a great idea. They possess a world of financial knowledge and quickly identify costly financial mistakes. Although most accountants are good at what they do, there are some that could use a refresher course. With a few short tips, you will be able to easily recognize if it is time to replace your current accountant for your home business.
Understanding- Once your accountant has gone over your home business financial records, he or she should be able to provide you with a simple explanation of it. They should be able talk to you in basic terms and not strictly accounting terms. Most of us do not have a degree in accounting and are not totally familiar with all of the ins and outs. If you cannot understand anything your accountant tells you about your home business finances, then you should advise them of this. Not knowing what is going on will cause you a major headache later on. It is always a good idea to be familiar with any profits or losses for the home business. An accountant that refuses to speak to you on your level is not worth your time.
Busy- During tax season, most accountants are extremely busy. They are trying their best to meet deadlines and have little time to give you the one on one treatment you sometimes need. However, if you have an accountant that is consistently busy and never returns your calls, then you should consider replacing them. If they are unable to answer any of your basic questions, then you need to look for one that can. Explaining the process of balancing accounts should be a routine action that does not take up much time. Feeling constantly intimidated by your accountant because of their rushed behavior is never a well balanced business relationship.
One on one- Most accountants that handle small business or individual accountants are frequently approached by their clients. It is not out of the ordinary to contact them on a regular basis when you have questions. As a home business owner, you need more one on one contact with your accountant. Since you are not comfortable enough making financial decisions on your own, you depend on them to give you sound financial advice about your home business. If you cannot get the time of day from your current accountant, then look for one that will make time for you.
Working with a good accountant for your home business needs is a valuable experience. In just a few short minutes, they can provide you with tons of information and advice. If your current accountant is too busy to manage his clients personally, then he is not fully doing his job. Having the ability to call your accountant anytime you have a question is what makes a winning business relationship. A dedicated accountant will value your business and questions without making you feel like an aggravation.
