In modern times they are becoming less used with the technology of veneers on
the rise. Dentures are however, a popular alternative for those who cannot
afford veneers.
Having dentures is a great option to improve chewing ability in those who have
lost their teeth. It also helps to spare a persons ego by having natural
looking teeth versus a gum-mouth. It also allows the person to speak more
clearly and eloquently.
In history dentures were first used in and around 700BC. They were typically
made from animal teeth or other human teeth, however they were not useful for
long term usage due to a quick decay. Dentures were often used a symbol of
beauty or wealth. Many men used ivory or bone for their dentures, and the more
fancy the dentures, the more rich they were seen as.
Its often difficult to keep dentures in place, and glues, and sticky pads can
cause gagging or even vomiting. Some people have difficulty enjoying sticky
foods, or tough foods. More often than not food can get stuck on the other side
of the denture palate, and cause a pain in the roof of the mouth, or around the
gum area. Top dentures are more easily used and inserted, but the lower denture
is hard to control and keep from slipping. Not to mention dentures only have
10% of the chewing ability that real natural teeth have! Imagine chewing a
steak with dentures.
Many people make the mistake of cleaning their dentures with regular
toothpaste. This makes them more dull and also allows small cuts to be made,
which allows in bacteria and other fungi.
Dentures are typically fitted and first installed in a dentists office. Many
people get them believing that they have ugly teeth, but later regret getting
all of their natural teeth extracted. Dentists are able to create a mold
specifically for your mouth only, and get the dentures ordered. Since our
mouths change over time, and dentures wear out, they need to be replaced every
so often.
Dentures are almost entirely customizable. Sometimes you are offered the option
of choosing the shade of your teeth! You either be smoker yellow, or movie star
white. Or anything in between! At first dentures may click while eating or
talking, it takes a lot of getting used to, and practice. Many people make the
mistake of not taking care of their mouth after getting dentures. Its crucial
to always brush your gums, any remaining teeth, and your palate.
A complete set of dentures will usually cost between $400 and up and over
$1000. It depends on your location and what options are available to you.
Specialty and individualized dentures are by far the most expensive, as they
are made from the best materials specifically designed for your own mouth.
