There has been hope among the Minnesota front office, coaching staff and some teammates that Butler would rejoin the team, but it remained to be seen what, if anything, Butler would do on the court with the Wolves on Wednesday. Butler verbally attacked Thibodeau and generally manager Scott Layden per Wojnarowski, reportedly telling Layden during a scrimmage, "You f--ing need me".
According to one source, Butler and a "team of third-stringers" beat the Wolves' starters in a scrimmage.
Butler showed up for his first practice of the preseason on Wednesday, and he didn't exactly opt to blend in with his Timberwolves' teammates.
Either way, Butler had previously refused Thibodeau's request to re-join the team, according to multiple reports from The Athletic. The Heat and president Pat Riley were "as aggressive as any team in pursuit of a Jimmy Butler trade", per Wojnarowski.
Alex Cora made the right moves when Red Sox needed it most
Cora's moves paid off in spades, but the player who had the most success apparently was surprised to hear he was getting the call. Masahiro Tanaka picked up the win as he allowed one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk over five innings.
With that in mind, the Heat appear to still be in pursuit.
"[Taylor] could have escaped his Butler nightmare by accepting a package from Miami that would have been headlined by the promising Heat swingman Josh Richardson and a protected first-round pick", Stein wrote in his latest mailbag column. According to ESPN's Stefano Fusaro, the Timberwolves reportedly asked for Tucker and shooting guard Eric Gordon in a trade involving the 29-year old guard. Butler has told Minnesota that he'll leave in free agency in July - and wants a trade now. Butler is said to prefer the Heat over all other potential destinations.
While Butler attending practice might seem like a good sign for his future with the Timberwolves, perhaps it's just the opposite.
What did they expect, Butler to come in and play nice?
