Yet, while the cost of a commercial trip to space with Virgin Galactic is not expected to come down in the immediate future, Branson said "ultimately" he would like to see the price fall to around $40,000 or $50,000 over the next decade.
Branson, the founder and CEO of Virgin Galactic, has been investing in this venture since 2004, but if the comments he made yesterday at the Barclays Asia Forum in Singapore are to be believed, the company is finally on the cusp of entering space.
Branson hopes to have a space craft that can carry six passengers and two pilots above Earth.
Virgin Galactic, which is charging £190,000 ($250,000) for a spot on one of its commercial flights, has previously said it would send passengers to space in 2019.

The RSF World Press Freedom Index also states that there is a "growing animosity towards journalists". Vigils in Marinova's memory were held Monday evening in Ruse, the capital Sofia and other cities.
Virgin Galactic now has about 800 passengers on its roster, all of whom have paid around $250,000 (£190,000) for a return trip to space. "And then we will be in space with myself in months and not years", the firm's founder and chief executive told news website CNBC.
To reach space, the pilots must take the Unity higher still. "And it is up to us to produce as many spaceships as we can to cater to that demand", he added.
Virgin Galactic has already completed several successful trial flights this year. The upper atmosphere is generally regarded to give way to space at an altitude of 62 miles (100km), almost twice the altitude achieved in the July test flight. In 2014, an early version of a Virgin Galactic spacecraft pulled apart and crashed during a test flight over the Mojave Desert, killing a co-pilot, Michael Alsbury.
