Authorities say 33-year-old police Cpl. Ronil Singh, Stanislaus County sheriff's Sgt. Tom Letras said.
An intense manhunt is underway tonight across California's Central Valley for a suspect who shot and killed a police officer.
The suspect had fled the scene in his vehicle prior to assisting officer's arrival.
Singh was shot a few minutes after radioing in that he was pulling over a gray pickup truck that had no license plate in Newman, a town of about 10,000 people some 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco.

They had travelled to the foothills of Mount Toubkal , North Africa's highest peak, not far from the tourist village of Imlil . The most recent took place in April 2011, when around 17 people were killed in a bombing of a restaurant in Marrakech.
Singh is survived by his wife, Anamika, and a 5-month-old son, authorities said.
A report in KCRA3 news said that Mr Singh was a native of Fiji and had immigrated to America.
"He was living the American dream", said Stanislaus deputy Singh, who is not related to the slain officer but knew him.
Flags will be flown at half-staff at the Capitol building in Sacramento, Brown said in offering condolences.
"At 12:57 AM, Officer Singh called off on a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman".
Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson said the Newman Police family is devastated by Mr Singh's death.
