Trump is "very seriously considering" Barr, said one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no decision has been announced, adding that Barr is "someone very much on the president's mind".
In this November 26, 1991, file photo, President George H.W Bush, right, and William Barr wave after Barr was sworn in as the new Attorney General of the United States at a Justice Department ceremony in Washington. Controversial interim Attorney General appointee Matthew Whitaker continues to serve in an acting role after Jeff Sessions resigned.
While he has an extremely conservative record, Barr would also bring to the role seasoned experience and is well regarded in the legal community.
Barr is the leading candidate to head the Department of Justice, according to The Washington Post on Thursday. In many ways, Barr is at least a path of least resistance, if not the path. Barr has been confirmed by the Senate in the past for this same position, in what the Los Angeles Times called "unusually placid hearings" even for that period.
Barr, however, has loyally supported many of Trump's decisions from the sidelines.
Body Of George H.W. Bush Returns To Washington
Bush will be honored at several public and private events in Houston and Washington before his burial on Thursday in Texas. Bush's service dog appearing to mourn beside the casket of his old master has left social media a little teary-eyed.
"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", he said.
Barr also wrote a year ago that the administration's decision to fire James B. Comey as FBI director was "quite understandable" because, in his view, Comey had usurped the power of the attorney general when he publicly announced his recommendation not to charge former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the investigation of her private email server.
Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No 2 Republican leader, agreed.
He also said that there would be nothing wrong with then Attorney General Jeff Sessions calling for an investigation into both Clinton and James Comey in regards to Clinton's private email server. But he has expressed concerns about political donations made by members of Mueller's team.
"In my view, prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party". I was happy that GTE's conduct of the litigation was considerably more aggressive than that of other similarly situated carriers who were also required to share their facilities and equipment with new competitors under the Act.
Two people familiar with the discussions said the president has told advisers in recent days that he plans to nominate Barr.
