Their filing detailed what they said was Cohen's already extensive cooperation, including seven voluntary interviews with the team of special counsel Robert Mueller, as well as meetings with federal prosecutors in New York, representatives of the New York State Attorney General's office and officials with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, which are conducting wide ranging probes into Trump's campaign and his family foundation.
Cohen is now cooperating with Mueller's probe into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. They concern some of the central questions of the investigation, including why the incoming Trump administration discouraged Russian Federation from retaliating over sanctions imposed for election hacking; who knew what when about illegally obtained Democratic emails; and how plans for a Trump Tower in Moscow came together and fell apart.
He said the primary reason he didn't pursue it was "I was focused on running for president".
They are expected to provide some detail about those false statements on Friday.
Lawyers for former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen argued Friday that their client should not go to prison for the criminal charges to which he has pleaded guilty, and unequivocally linked much of his wrongdoing to his desire to protect and support President Donald Trump.
The negotiations about building the Moscow tower continued as late as June 2016, even though Cohen told two congressional committees a year ago that the talks had ended that January.
Asked whether there was anything in the answers to questions from Mueller that Trump submitted that contradicts Cohen on the Moscow project, Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told Reuters in a text message: "Not that I know of".
"I was aware of Individual 1's repeated disavowals of commercial and political ties between himself and Russia, his repeated statements that investigations of such ties were politically motivated and without evidence, and that any contact with Russian nationals by Individual 1's campaign or the Trump Organization had all terminated before the Iowa Caucus, which was on February 1 of 2016", Cohen told the Judge.
Cohen's upcoming sentencing will cover all of the counts to which he's pleaded guilty.
May says UK's Brexit future lies in MPs' hands
Wales and Scotland say they have been ignored in the negotiating process, something the government denies. People voted for Brexit and I think it's up to us to deliver Brexit.
Trump on Thursday called Cohen a "weak person" who was lying to get a lighter sentence and stressed that the real estate deal at issue was never a secret and never executed. George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign aide, lied in hopes of landing an administration job. "What he's trying to do is get a reduced sentence".
Manafort cut a deal with prosecutors in September and pleaded guilty to conspiracy against the United States and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
More lies followed as prosecutors this week accused former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of lying even after his guilty plea, though they have not said about what. Although sources could not confirm the topic of conversation between the two, the timing is of course suspicious given WikiLeaks's subsequent dump of Hillary Clinton's emails.
A false statement charge can be a powerful cudgel for prosecutors, especially in investigations like this one where witnesses are recalcitrant and openly defiant.
The White House delayed answering the questions since the beginning of this year, anxious that Trump could be trapped in a possible lie by making statements contrary to evidence presented Mueller by others.
Mueller's prosecutors made a point of telling the court they believed Cohen was telling the truth in connection with his plea bargain. "And that's what you do when you have uncooperative people (who are) trying to hide something that you're trying to get to the bottom of".
The nine-page charging document traces behind-the-scenes communication about a project that had first been discussed more than 20 years ago. "With each indictment and each guilty plea, we learn more about the president's connections to Russian Federation in the midst of Russia's efforts to interfere in the 2016 election", said Virginia Sen.
Cohen is the first person charged by Mueller with lying to Congress, an indication the special counsel is prepared to treat that offence as seriously as lying to federal agents and a warning shot to dozens of others who have appeared before lawmakers. He said Stone then incorporated those falsehoods into his congressional testimony - an allegation that Stone vehemently denies.
Not to mention, he noted, past Washington investigations like Watergate.
