Failing a successful purchase bid, Sears is facing the possibility of liquidation, ending the company's 125-year run as one of the country's best-known retailers.
In the announcement, Sears Holdings said it notified employees at the affected stores on Thursday.
Last week, a bankruptcy court allowed Sears Holdings to sell its home improvement service businesses to Service.com for $60 million. Sears' chairman, Eddie Lampert, has been trying to buy the company out of bankruptcy through his hedge fund, ESL Investments.
A Sears store in Sioux City, Iowa, is also among those being closed.
The company and its restructuring adviser declined to comment Friday on any bids it may have received. If he doesn't - and if no other bidders arise, Sears will have a critical decision to make. Sears' corporate headquarters was not answering further questions, either.
At the end of November, Sears offered grim projections for holiday sales, expecting to burn through cash most weeks.
The 80 stores are due to close by March.
Minnesota stores include the three-level location at the Mall of America, which was not originally on the list of stores closing.
Sears filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. At the time of the filing, Sears had just under 700 stores and planned to shut down 142 unprofitable stores.
