"Detectives have additional investigative work to complete", a police spokesman said in a tweet.
Anne Kavanagh, a spokeswoman for Smollett's lawyers, said they would "keep an active dialogue with Chicago police on his behalf".
"Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying", the statement from attorneys Todd Pugh and Victor P. Henderson said.
The men - one of whom is Smollett's former personal trainer - claim they were hired and instructed to purchase the rope that was found round the actor's neck. I don't want to completely blame him, because you know somebody who I was talking to say that police in Chicago are racist. "We've reached out to the Empire cast member's attorney to request a follow-up interview", the statement read.
Financial Times: British intelligence says Huawei risk manageable
A foreign ministry spokesman said Monday that Beijing would not use its companies to gather information about foreign companies. The advice suggests the United Kingdom may be reticent to follow other nations in banning Huawei from supplying 5G technology.
Smollett described the letter in an interview last week with Good Morning America, saying, "It had a stick figure hanging from a tree with a gun pointing toward it with the words that says Smollett Jussie, you will die".
The insiders went on to say that the two men were nervous the night of the assault, but carried out the plan, even making some "contact with Jussie's face" that they insisted was "weak".
And, as rumours continue to swirl that Smollett may have staged the attack amid claims his character was being written off the hit TV show, TMZ.com have now reported that the case is heading to a grand jury. "It feels like if I had said it was a Muslim or a Mexican or someone black I feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot much more", Smollett said.
Earlier, CBS Chicago reported that Olabinjo and Abimbola were paid $3,500 for their part in the attack.
"I've heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative", he said.
However, a Chicago police spokesperson said over the weekend that Smollett is no longer being considered a victim in the case, causing some Democrats to backtrack on their initial statements about the incident.
