The CDC says there have been 79 cases of measles so far this year in the states that reported data, and it's only February. The identities of the patients have not been released by DSHS, but the health department said the children were either too young to be vaccinated or had not completed the two-part vaccination series. However, there are 11 people who display symptoms of measles and are awaiting the results of blood work to confirm the diagnosis.
"We know there's a link between two of the Houston-area cases, and public health is investigating to determine whether the others are linked or whether they occurred independently", Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman Chris Van Deusen said. A possible sixth case in Texas is awaiting lab confirmation. About 1 out of 4 people who get measles will be hospitalized. The measles vaccine is reported to be very effective; 97 percent of those who receive both vaccinations are immune.
The CDC states measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air via coughing and sneezing.
These worldwide travelers then spread measles upon their return, which cause outbreaks in the USA. Other symptoms include a high fever over 101 degrees, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.
Unexpected magnetic north pole changes mean new world magnetic model map
Since 1831 when it was first measured in the Canadian Arctic it has moved about 1400 miles (2300 km) towards Siberia. Scientists this week have updated the location of magnetic north a year ahead of schedule.
In 2018, Texas had nine confirmed measles cases.
The people involved in these new cases stayed home while contagious, so there are no new public exposure sites where people might have come in contact with the disease. Past year was the highest number of cases since 2014, which had ten reported cases. County officials were working to confirm that the woman had been vaccinated.
Public Health's announcement this afternoon also had 11 suspected cases, three of which the department was able to confirm were initially unimmunized though they received the vaccination after 72 hours of exposure. Measles is prevented through the combination MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.
