President Donald Trump signalled on Wednesday that United States trade talks with China are going well but said a final agreement will not be reached until he meets his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping.
"We're not going to know if those structural changes are going to take place (in China). that can't happen by March 1 but because the atmospheric around these trade talks are likely to be very positive, especially when President Trump meets (China's) Liu He, the markets are going to take that as a sign that progress has been made". If both sides fail to reach an agreement by March 1, US tariffs on Chinese goods will be raised to 25 percent from 10 percent.
China is working towards a green, inclusive and open 2022 Winter Olympics, said Chinese President Xi Jinping while meeting with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday. All of the many problems are being discussed and will be hopefully resolved.
Trump said any deal must include China opening its market to USA financial institutions, manufacturing and agriculture as well as other unspecified "businesses and industries".
"The odds of them stonewalling and rope-a-doping in this meeting are close to zero", said Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation think-tank.
USA and Chinese negotiators are holding high-level talks aimed at settling a six-month trade war that has weakened both sides, shaken financial markets and clouded the outlook for the global economy.
There has been little outward indication of friction in the talks in Washington caused by USA criminal charges on Monday against Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, accusing them of conspiring to violate US sanctions on Iran.
He is expected to meet with the Chinese delegation later Thursday.

Liu He is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-U.S. comprehensive economic dialogue.
The US President also addressed the ongoing trade talks between Washington and Beijing.
"Trump is the kind of guy who's never going to accept that the deal is good enough unless he's in the room cutting the deal", Wilder said, calling a summit "the inevitable conclusion" of the trade conflict. "The talks will continue and you can not expect to solve all the issues at once", said Liu Weidong, expert in U.S. affairs at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The administration has already imposed tariffs on some $250 billion in Chinese imports.
The Chinese trade delegation began two days of negotiations with USA counterparts Wednesday.
But US officials don't believe that this will hinder the trade negotiations.
Trump heralded his steel tariffs on Monday as a'big win' for the United States as his trade war with China came under official review by governing organization for global trade. This could maintain the threat of US tariffs on Chinese goods for the long term.
China has called USA measures protectionist.
