The news comes almost eight months after The Walt Disney Company fired Gunn over a series of offensive, years-old, tweets. Disney Studios president Alan Horn was persuaded by Gunn's public apology and his handling of the situation and made a decision to reverse course to reinstate him, according to Deadline. It seems that is intact and his new contract states he cannot begin the third Guardians film until he completes The Suicide Squad.
But much of the "Guardians" cast signed an open letter previous year seeking Gunn's rehiring; Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, was especially vocal in his support of Gunn, as a #WeAreGroot campaign gained traction.
Gunn posted a tweet Friday afternoon acknowledging his return to Disney, saying he was "tremendously grateful" to his supporters and "excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all". Post firing, Disney President Alan Horn met Gunn on a few occasions to discuss the whole matter.
The End Of The MCU? The Final Avengers: Endgame Trailer Has Dropped!
Now, we see him riding on the back of War Machine, so it appears as though he's assimilated to the Avengers and Earth just fine. Will the Avengers save the world? Iron Man has survived the cold reaches of space to join the mission alongside Nebula.
Gunn was sacked by the Mouse House last summer after a series of controversial old tweets from the filmmaker surfaced.
"Although I don't support James Gunn's inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man", Pratt wrote on Instagram at the time. In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. "Love to you all". "I think in the next six, eight months, next year, you're gonna see James Gunn bounce back in a huge way, which is gonna be a huge statement and real vindication", Bautista added.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" has found its director, and it's the same director from before. The characters have been featured in the latest "Avengers" storyline, beginning with "Infinity War" and continuing with the upcoming "Endgame". Persuaded by Gunn's public apology and his handling of the situation after, and the rallying-around exhibited by the likes of stars Dave Bautista, Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, Horn chose to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.
