In an effort to provide embattled Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu a boost at the polls and grow his own popularity among pro-Israel evangelicals in the US, Trump announced today that "it is time" for the US to "fully recognize Israel's sovereignty" over the Golan Heights.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967 and formally annexed the territory in 1981.
Pompeo's two-day visit to Jerusalem also includes a symbolic stop at the new United States embassy, which was transferred from Tel Aviv on Trump's orders a year ago. Trump wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
On Thursday, Pompeo visited the sacred Western Wall with Netanyahu, in a move that could anger Palestinians who also claim the area.
Netanyahu arrives in Washington next week to meet with Trump and address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, lobbying group.
But in a tweet that appeared to catch many by surprise, Trump said the time had come.
Mr. Trump, whose decision past year to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv angered Palestinians, faced some criticism for his latest move.
Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat panned the Golan announcement and said USA policy would bring "bloodshed in our region".

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu affirmed his country's support for Syria's "territorial integrity".
Washington's "attempts to legitimize Israel's illegal acts will only lead to more violence in the region", he said.
At the United Nations, a spokesman for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declined to comment. The report revised its usual description of the Golan Heights from "Israeli-occupied" to "Israeli-controlled".
Trump, who became the first US president to make good on a promise to relocate the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to its capital city of Jerusalem, is now pushing for recognition of Israel's control over the Golan Heights, a policy that Israel has also been pushing for.
"There's no obvious constituency not to do this", the official said, defending the move.
