McClain trained in both medium and large-size spacesuits but only realised after her actual spacewalk that the medium-size suit fitted her best, Nasa said. "Because only one medium-size torso can be made ready by Friday, March 29, Koch will wear it", NASA said.
Ms. McClain now is tentatively scheduled to perform her next spacewalk on Monday, April 8 with Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques.
Based on the schedule of activities on the station, however, delaying this spacewalk would at least push back the third Expedition 59 spacewalk, now set to take place on April 8, and it could have had an impact on the timing of upcoming arrivals at the station, as well.
When McClain did a spacewalk with fellow astronaut Nick Hague on March 22, she discovered that the medium-size upper torso portion of the spacesuit fit her best. "Chances are they're going to see space again at some point and, as much as we can, we'd like to make them veteran spacewalkers".
Before the swap, Friday's spacewalk was set to be led by women both in space and on the ground. However, after completing the walk, she noted how hard it was to maneuver in the large suit and requested a medium suit for this week's spacewalk.
Nasa's plans for an all-female spacewalk have fallen through - at least in part because the agency doesn't have enough spacesuits that fit the astronauts.
Russian Troops in Venezuela Complicate U.S. Regime Change Plans
A Venezuelan official said Russian military officials were visiting to discuss equipment maintenance and training, and strategy. The information ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the presence of the planes or the Bloomberg report.
According to the agency, astronaut Nick Hague will participate in the spacewalk outside the International Space Station with Koch. "The latest class of NASA astronauts, selected in 2013, includes four women and four men". It would have been the first time an all-female mission conducted the mission, which has usually been completed by an all-male or male-female team.
NASA astronaut Anne McClain reacts as her spacesuit is tested prior to launch onboard the Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft at the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on December 3, 2018. Each walk is scheduled to last around six-and-a-half hours.
Koch is a native of MI and graduated from N.C. State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Physics and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, says NASA.
It will be Koch's first spacewalk. "Because only one medium-size torso can be made ready by Friday, Koch will wear it".
