Border Patrol officials have said they are overwhelmed by the number of migrants illegally crossing the border this year, forcing them to release thousands of illegal aliens who could not be held or returned to their home countries.

One administration official warned that the effects of doing so could be "catastrophic" and a White House official told CNN that "we could be in a whole world of hurt" if the President decides to close the border.

But critics have said people are fleeing Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala because conditions there are really bad, and cutting aid could worsen the situation and lead to a further surge in the numbers headed for the US.
