- Crystal Lake Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials will host a press conference this afternoon to update the latest information in the search for A.J. Freund, the 5-year-old boy who has been missing for almost a week.
Remains police believe are those of Andrew "AJ" Freund were found wrapped in plastic in a shallow grave in a remote area of Woodstock, Illinois, about seven miles from the boy's home, Crystal Lake police chief James Black said Wednesday.
The parents of a 5-year-old Crystal Lake boy who went missing Thursday were charged with his alleged murder on Wednesday, police announced at a conference.
Black said information discovered through "forensic analysis of cell phone data" led investigators to speak with both AJ's father, Andrew Freund Sr., and his mother, JoAnn Cunningham, overnight Tuesday. Meanwhile, police are back at the family's house investigating.
Investigators previously said they did not believe the boy was abducted. Following his disappearance, news was released that the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services had been involved with the family in the past and police had been called to the home before, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Crystal Lake police and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed the parents overnight after information was obtained through a forensic analysis of cellphone data, Black said.
Black said the McHenry County Coroner's Office and FBI Recovery Unit are on the scene, and the cause of death is unknown at this time.
On behalf of the Crystal Lake Police Department, we would like to thank the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office and the other local, state, and county law enforcement and fire department and emergency management entities.
Woman details alleged Walton assault
As a sports reporter, Tennant had regular contact with Walton because he was a lead analyst covering the Lakers for SportsNet. The NBA said it is working with the Kings on gathering more information. "And I have spent years now dealing with this".
"To AJ - we know you are at peace playing in heaven's playground, and are happy you no longer have to suffer", Black said.
AJ Freund was reported missing Thursday after disappearing from his parents' home after being put to bed.
Photos and video showed officers leaving the Crystal Lake home of Andrew Freund Sr. and JoAnn Cunningham on Wednesday with a shovel, mattress, brown paper bags and plastic storage tub.
JoAnn Cunningham, 36, is now facing murder charges as well for the death of AJ Freund, but back in 2012 her name was JoAnn Summerkamp and her marriage was approaching its end.
Sonar teams that searched Crystal Lake found nothing, and the canine teams "only picked up Andrew's "scent" within the residence, indicating that Andrew had not walked away on foot", the police said. While the two never married, they were said to be living together with their children and no longer dating.
One report described seeing the home littered with dog feces and urine, and a children's bedroom where 'the smell of feces was overwhelming'.
DCFS has been in regular contact with the family, however, and once removed AJ from the home shortly after he was born because he had opiates in his system.
A custody hearing involving the brother of a missing suburban Chicago boy and their parents has been continued.
