Two of the dead were crane operators and two were in cars smashed by the crane, Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said at a news conference. But, she said, the city also saw "some miracles", like a 25-year-old mother and her 4-month-old daughter who survived despite being trapped inside one of the cars crushed by the crane. Three people were transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The last time a person died in a crane accident in the area was in 2006 in nearby Bellevue, when a crane fell and killed a Microsoft attorney in his home.
Sarah Wong was in a auto on Mercer Street when the crane fell. A mother and her infant were released from the hospital Saturday.
Once home to the city's logging and maritime industries, the South Lake Union neighbourhood, where the crane fell, has grown substantially in the last 15 years, like Seattle as a whole.
