USA congressional Democrats moved closer on Thursday to suing in federal court for access to the unredacted Mueller report on Russian election meddling, and its underlying evidence, taking a step bound to intensify their clash with President Donald Trump. Although Mueller declined to charge Trump with obstruction, he explicitly refused to exonerate the president.
Politico said that Pelosi was "expressing solidarity with pro-impeachment Democrats who want to hold the president accountable while disputing the idea that it is now time to take that step".
It's unclear what Trump meant, since Mueller hasn't testified about his lengthy special counsel probe - and said last week that he wouldn't offer any testimony that expands on the final report he delivered in March to Attorney General Bill Barr. On the one hand, she hates Trump and wants to destroy him.
Mueller's statement last week and the subsequent reaction to it proved that many lawmakers hadn't even read his report.
Pelosi, however, has expressed concerns about the prospect that Trump would be acquitted by the Senate's Republican majority following impeachment by the House. Many of those members have said they would prefer to be working on policy instead of investigations of the president. The speaker, it seems, is attempting to thread a needle between mollifying the restive progressive base of her party and assuaging institutional Democratic establishment forces who are concerned about the possible political ramifications at the ballot box in 2020 of such an unjustified impeachment push.
Trump also personally attacked Mueller the day after his public appearance, leveling discredited accusations that the former special counsel had conflicts of interest that made him a biased investigator.
Mueller's 22-month investigation was unable to establish a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia despite finding significant contacts between Trump associates and Russians.
Of course, Mueller has never testified before Congress.
Nadler thinks impeachment is not supported by the people because they don't know the facts.
"When that decision has to be made, it will be made not by any one individual, it will be made probably by the caucus as a whole", Nadler said. "I hope we take that back to Washington, not wanting to put somebody in jail but putting Americans first".
