The House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday that prevents immigrants who came to the U.S.as young children from being deported and gives them permanent residency along with a path to citizenship, fulfilling a major campaign promise without the drama that sank Miami Republicans when they tried to find an immigration compromise past year.
The bill is aimed at seeking solutions to the problems with the immigration status of beneficiaries of the DACA program and two other programs - temporary protected status (TPS - Temporary Protected Status) and pending deportation (DED - Deferred Enforced Departure) that offer temporary protection of illegal immigrants from deportation.
While Democrats are calling the passage of the legislation a victory, the bill is expected to be dead on arrival in the Senate as most Republicans in the upper chamber are against amnesty. The House bill also claws back a portion of the billions of dollars Trump has unilaterally diverted toward constructing portions of his wall.
H.R. 6 expands DACA by reducing the criteria for eligibility, tripling the number of individuals who would be provided a green card and a special pathway to citizenship to total as many as 2.7 million people.

Internal fights between Republicans and Trump's call for funding to care for Central American migrants being held at the southern U.S. border further delayed the bill.
With 144,278 apprehensions reported by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in May alone, the border crisis is seemingly worsening. Almost all Democrats voted for the legislation, with five not voting.
"Today, after YEARS of GOP refusal, the House finally voted on the DREAM Act under a Dem majority", she wrote.
"I said it to my leadership and I'll say it to this leadership: Bad process builds bad policy builds bad politics", Gosar said of the rules governing debate on the bill. "In the midst of this border disaster, which cries out for congressional action to plug the legal loopholes that are attracting people, the Democratic House passes the largest amnesty bill in American history, without even fig-leaf enforcement measures". "I'm pleased we've moved past that", said House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey, D-N.Y.
"This is about who we are as Americans, and what is in the best interests of our country", said Democrat Lucille Roybal-Allard, the measure's chief sponsor.
"We're rejecting the political stunts and grandstanding that have made it hard to deliver much-needed disaster relief to families and communities across America", House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey said.
