A nationwide wave of arrests of immigrants facing deportation will commence over the weekend, US President Donald Trump said on Friday, confirming that the plan, meant to discourage a surge of Central American migrants, was on track after a delay.
Miami Democrats in Congress are trying to raise awareness and prepare their constituents to face immigration raids on Sunday, comparing their pleas to the work they do before hurricanes to raise alarm and spur action before a major storm makes landfall.
While Kansas City is not on the list of cities being targeted, staff at El Centro said any raid operation leads to unease for immigrant families. "On Friday, President Donald Trump confirmed ICE will carry out the raids, saying the operation will center around removing "criminals" from the country".
The raids will be conducted in 10 cities over multiple days and will include "collateral" deportations and detention, in which other immigrants than the intended targets of the raid will be arrested and possibly deported.
"The president's order for concentrated ICE raids against immigrant families in Houston and elsewhere stands against everything we represent as a welcoming city".
"We have not been notified about the scale of the operation", Suarez said.
