These are all 20th Century Fox franchises that became Disney franchises when Disney bought the majority of Fox's entertainment assets for a staggering $71.3 billion. Disney CEO Bob Iger had this to say in a statement.
During the earnings conference call, Iger also announced a direct-to-consumer bundle that will include Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu for $12.99 total. Netflix provides lots of original content as well as a library of movies and TV shows, though some of those shows like The Office and Friends are disappearing to rival streaming services from NBCUniversal and Warner Media, respectively, starting next year. The company has announced a bundle that will be available when its new streaming service launches later this year, which will also include Hulu and ESPN+. That compared with $1.87 a share on revenue of $15.23 billion during the same period of time past year. But the underperformance of Fox units hampered Disney earnings, despite the success of Disney's overall film slate, which included blockbusters such as "Avengers: Endgame". Per Deadline, Disney+ will launch with 300 film titles and 7,500 episodes of Disney TV series, with a plan to get to 400 film titles in the first year.
Analysts had predicted earnings of $1.72 a share and sales of $21.45 billion in the quarter.
Though, Apple will likely have an easier time in overseas markets like the United Kingdom and Australia, where it's already announced plans to offer its streaming service - something Disney has yet to confirm.
RCMP complete search of river near Gillam, Man., for murder suspects
On 23 July, the pair were named suspects in the double murder of Australian Lucas Fowler, 23, and U.S. citizen Chynna Deese, 24. The police search for the pair has involved sniffer dogs, drones, helicopters, boats, ATVs and two military aircrafts.
Iger said the Fox underperformance during the quarter didn't reflect a pre-acquisition failure of due diligence on Disney's part - instead, it was a function of regulatory red tape, he said.
Nonetheless, Iger expressed continued confidence in Disney's strategy of using Fox properties to boost its growth in the streaming business, where it will compete with aggressive tech players like Netflix.
Iger noted "head winds" for the film unit and said that it would take a few years to "turn around" the studio.
