"Other than the departure flights that have completed the check-in process and the arrival flights that are already heading to Hong Kong, all other flights have been cancelled for the rest of [Monday]", a statement from the airport said, adding that flights would resume Tuesday.

Demonstrations started in June in opposition to a proposed extradition bill, which would have allowed suspected criminals to be sent to mainland China for trial.

Some protesters also covered up their right eyes in solidarity with the injured woman.
Australian travellers stuck in Hong Kong have described chaotic scenes at the airport.
Demonstrators say they are fighting the erosion of the "one country, two systems" arrangement enshrining some autonomy for Hong Kong when China took it back from Britain in 1997.
"I came out today to reject the government in Hong Kong and and the police violence", said Matthew, 22, who works in IT.
The 17.05 (local time) Air New Zealand flight from Hong Kong to Auckland looked to be going ahead, but the 21.05 Cathay Pacific flight to Auckland was showing as cancelled, along with Cathay Pacific, Virgin Australia and Qantas flights to various destinations in Australia.

Meanwhile, a group of masked protesters also held their own press conference on the same day criticizing recent police violence which brought Hong Kong to "its darkest weekend in contemporary history".
"I support them, though I don't agree with all their methods", Annie Chan, an accountant, said at a shopping plaza that protesters briefly occupied.
"Cathay Pacific wishes to make it clear that we express no view whatsoever on the subject matter of any proceedings to which he may be subject", the company said.
As the unrest show no signs of stopping, and as a response to their demands from the Hong Kong government stays wanting, protesters have increasingly turned to the global community for potential relief.
Tear gas was also deployed in central Hong Kong on both sides of Victoria Harbour, in the Tsim Sha Tsui area on the Kowloon side and in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island.
They ban any staff member accused of involvement in "illegal protests" from working on those flights, with authorities warning planes could be prevented from landing if they fail to comply.
The rioting poses "a serious challenge to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability", Yang said.
They said the firing of tear gas inside the Kwai Fong subway station disregarded the manufacturers' safety instructions, which said the device was strictly limited to outdoor use.
