The Masters champion Woods opened with a disappointing four-over 75 on Thursday and subsequently scratched citing a "mild oblique strain that led to pain and stiffness".
With the rain storm Wednesday - which caused some damage at Liberty National - and a short-lived downpour Thursday night, conditions are favorable.
"I didn't hit any good shots and didn't make any putts".
Woods, 43, had acknowledged that his back was stiff on the eve of the first event of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs which had limited his ability to practice.
Woods has battled back from injuries, including a series of back surgeries, in the latter part of his career.
"It's still a little bit stiff, but that's just the way it's going to be", he told reporters after finishing almost last on a morning when Troy Merritt shot 62 to lead fellow American Dustin Johnson by one shot with half the field having completed their rounds.

As a rule, Pixel phones haven't had much more than their cameras and software to help distinguish them from the pack. The devices will both be powered by the Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of storage.
That week, Woods had opened the tournament with a 77, then withdrew the next day with back spasms.
"He's being smart", said Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, who spoke to the golfer Friday.
"The driver felt fine but I just didn't feel sharp with anything else". He's made the cut just twice in that time. He shouldn't put himself in a position where he could put himself out for a long period of time.
Woods has only committed to a new US PGA Tour event in Japan in October, while he will also tee up in his foundation's 18-man unofficialevent in the Bahamas the week before travelling to Melbourne. It was last year at East Lake that he capped off his comeback from four back surgeries with his first victory in five years.
But he hasn't been the same since. The only Playoff event with a cut after Round 2 will see 55 players eliminated after Round 4 with the top 70 in the FedExCup standings advancing to the BMW Championship.
Woods will need to play next week's BMW Championship at Medinah and overtake rival players in order to finish in the season's top 30 and earn a chance of defending his Tour Championship title in the campaign finale at East Lake.
