Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told reporters late last month he had received more than 50 applications, and that he expected to receive more.
"It is another 90 days for the US telecom companies", Ross said. While this will at least give the company time to fine tune HarmonyOS before the next P-Series launches in 2020, it still throws the future of Huawei's presence in the West into turmoil.
At the same time, Ross said pressure is still being applied to Huawei.
"There's another 90 days for the U.S. telecom companies, some of the rural companies are dependent on Huawei", Ross said on Fox Business Network.
He said there were small parts of Huawei's business that could be exempted from a broader ban, but that it would be "very complicated".
As the White House continues to reverse positions on Huawei, the Chinese company's fortunes become less and less dependent upon the whims of the administration and access to the USA market.
The US government blacklisted Huawei, alleging that the Chinese company is involved in activities contrary to national security or foreign policy interests. Huawei has denied such allegation.

Huawei could be given another 90-day window to buy components from U.S. suppliers in order to serve existing smartphone and telco customers. While the ban on Huawei may be founded, there's reason to believe the company is being used as a bargaining chip in the US-China trade war.

The dispute has come to symbolise the growing rivalry between the USA and China, which have been fighting a trade war for more than a year.
Huawei's blacklisting meant that they were barred from buying components needed for their existing phone models from the U.S.
