Forecasters say ocean levels could rise up to 20 feet (6 meters) in parts of the northern Bahamas with the storm surge topped with huge waves.
Over the next two to three days, the hurricane could dump as much as 4 feet (1.2 meters) of rain, unleash devastating winds and whip up an abnormal and risky rise in sea level called storm surge, meteorologist Ryan Maue told The Associated Press.
"Dorian continues to move to the west but it has slowed down now to 5 miles per hour and seems to be behaving on track", he reported Sunday night.
Hurricane Dorian has been upgraded to a Category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is predicted to ride along the Florida, Georgia and Carolina coasts, according to meteorologists.
Various tentative models show the center of Dorian clipping North Carolina's Outer Banks on Friday before passing south and east of Cape Cod by Saturday morning, Cioffi said.
The government of the Bahamas has discontinued the hurricane warning for New Providence and Eleuthera, and the hurricane watch for Andros island. The hurricane is being steered by the weak flow to the south of the ridge of high pressure over the western Atlantic.
"If there is a difference in the track by 30 miles, that's the difference between tropical-storm-force and hurricane winds", Dean said Sunday on "Fox & Friends".
But Jack Pittard, a 76-year-old American who has been traveling to the Bahamas for 40 years, said he has chose to ride out the storm in The Abaco Islands.
"Once Dorian starts moving northward and the storm expands, we will see the storm weaken gradually", Cioffi said.
"The hurricane will then move dangerously close to the Florida coast late Tuesday through Wednesday evening and then move dangerously close the Georgia and SC coasts on Wednesday night and Thursday", NOAA forecasters wrote. That would slow Dorian down even more, just as it nears the Bahamas.
Shoppers purchase water before the arrival of Hurricane Dorian
According to the National Hurricane Center, "There is an increasing risk of strong winds and unsafe storm surge along the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina later this week". Residents there should take immediate shelter.
The advisory read: "Catastrophic Category 5 Dorian continuing to intensify as it approaches the Abaco Islands".
Hurricane Dorian roared Sunday towards the Bahamas as the island chain braced for a devastating direct hit, before the monster storm churns up the United States coast from Florida towards the Carolinas.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 180mph. Impact from the storm has not moved farther inland past the current projected path/cone.
Hurricanes of this power would be expected to cause widespread, catastrophic damage.
"Devastating hurricane conditions" are expected in the Abaco Islands early on Sunday and across Grand Bahama island later in the day, the centre said.
The 1 a.m. Monday update continued to characterize the situation created by the Category 5 Hurricane Dorian as "life-threatening". Power and water outages were reported, with crews working in some communities as authorities warned that all government workers will remain indoors once winds reach 40 miles per hour.
Hurricane Dorian expected wind speeds. The official hurricane center forecast path has also been adjusted a bit in that direction. "Do not venture into the eye if it passes over your location". But exactly where (or if) it will hit the US East Coast remains unclear. We can expect high winds, rain, storm surge, and potential flooding.
In case of a Category 5 hurricane, a high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse, according to the explanation of the wind scale categorization.
United boss Solskjaer happy to rely on Rashford, Martial for goals
United are now seventh in the Premier League table, having taken five points from their first four matches of the season. I am not going to sit here and react in a negative way. "We just need players that want to play for the club".
