Albuquerque's Transit Department provided 2,000 free bus passes to 350 New Mexico for the climate action events, including for students to attend Friday's strike.
The hope is the strikes will show world leaders that it's not just young people who want climate change to be addressed.
But Catholic and Anglican church-run schools say their students should remain in class, as do NSW public schools. The demonstrations were given a boost after NY public schools said pupils could leave lessons to join the strike without being penalised.
"It doesn't meet the criteria for what would be an excused absence", said Robinson. "They have a responsibility to follow state law and the guidelines, and in our case school board policy as much as there may be difference in personal opinion". Principals at individual schools can allow students to protest but aren't responsible for those who leave campus. Friday's strike could result in a huge turnout.
"This strike is a student-led initiative and we acknowledge that many of our students and community members care deeply about this issue".

In the coming months, District administration has committed to engaging student leadership on this important issue in an effort to create future actionable steps. "We need to go out there and deal with things that adults are just not addressing".
Great Southern Grammar principal Mark Sawle said students would be marked as absent if they did not attend school on Friday. "We have and must take a stand for our future when our government will not", the ACTU said in a statement. "It is very essential that the youth are one of the leading voices with regards to enacting change".

Like a growing number of municipalities, the City of Burlington declared a climate emergency this past spring. The council passed a resolution, unanimously, stating students should not be penalized for their participation.
"Millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels", said the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club, who is helping to organize the event.
Millions of students worldwide are expected to walk out of their schools during the week of September 20-27.
That's the case for middle and high school students at Portland Public Schools, however, those in elementary grades will need to be checked out of school by a parent to be excused.
MHS organizers said they were moved to action after reading "The Uninhabitable Earth" by David Wallace-Wells.
"Young people are going to be concerned, they believe their teachers, they actually think that they're at school and what they're being told is true".
"[The book] sent me into a full on existential crisis for like two weeks", Shapiro said.
