The Met Gala, of course, is always tied to an exhibition that commemorates the institution's continued existence: this year's theme nodded to the notion of camp that was first popularized by Susan Sontag.
If you thought the last theme (Camp!) was confusing, and as a licensed gay man let me assure you that it was, I can only imagine that the lewks on display this time around will launch us all into a full-on existential crisis. Fun!
Next year's Met Gala coincides with the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 150th anniversary, and the entire year will be dedicated to commemorative exhibitions and events to celebrate, including the Met Gala.
The co-chairs for the gala, which will take place on Monday, May 4, will be Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière, actress Emma Stone, "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, the iconic Meryl Streep, and longtime Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The exhibit traces fashion from 1870 to the present and will feature approximately 160 examples of women's fashion.

The museum announced the annual fundraising event's 2020 theme, "About Time: Fashion and Duration", on Thursday and said the accompanying spring exhibition, inspired by the 1992 Sally Porter film Orlando, will present a century-and-a-half of fashion history.

"This exhibition will consider the ephemeral nature of fashion, employing flashbacks and fast-forwards to reveal how it can be both linear and cyclical", said Max Hollein , the director of the Met in New York City. To cap things off, the Met's press release states that none other than Virginia Woolf will serve as the "ghost narrator" of the exhibition, which essentially means that her writings will be used to give About Time: Fashion and Duration more context.
