Congress and NCP leaders held a meeting in the evening. This follows Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's report to the Centre which stated that the formation of a stable government is impossible in the current situation despite all his efforts.
Pawar, a stalwart of Maharashtra politics, was a senior leader in the Congress party when it won the Maharashtra assembly polls of 1978. This is, however, not the first time that Maharashtra has gone under central rule in its history: President's Rule was imposed for the first time in 1980, and then again in 2014. Shah also said that Governor had waited for 18 days for political parties to form government.
The Shiv Sena chief responded to criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party for approaching the Congress and the NCP, pointing out that the saffron party too had formed an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir, News18 reported.
After the BJP had expressed its inability to form the government, the governor had invited the second largest party, the Shiv Sena, on Sunday evening. He said now that the state was under central rule, the three parties had six months to give shape to the next government. Congress had accused NCP of getting close to the BJP, something that both the NCP and BJP had denied.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress, however, said they were open to an alliance with the Shiv Sena, but needed "clarity" on issues and would like to come up with a common minimum programme. Gandhi, however, had her way in 1980 when she dismissed Pawar's government- along with eight other states governed by non-Congress parties- and fresh polls were announced.
