The Trump Administration has submitted formal notification to the United Nations to officially start the U.S. withdrawal process from the Paris Agreement, according to an announcement made today from the White House.
The agreement was ratified on Nov 4, 2016 and the rules prevented any nation from withdrawing for the first three years.
"By withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, the Trump administration is showing that it cares neither about science nor economics".
The withdrawal procedures will take a year to complete meaning the U.S. will officially leave the Paris deal on the 4 November 2020, one day after the USA election on 3 November.
Secretary of State Michael Pompeo's announcement Monday of the formal US retreat came on the first day that it was possible for the U.S.to make the move. "The United States has reduced all types of emissions, even as we grow our economy and ensure our citizens' access to affordable energy".
Is the USA really cutting carbon emissions? The withdrawal will be complete this time next year, after a one-year waiting period has elapsed. When the Paris Agreement was being negotiated, the USA delegation pushed for more transparency and accountability to make sure the countries that signed on would actually do what they promised.

"Donald Trump is more concerned about protecting his golf courses than he is about climate change-fueled flooding that could threaten 300 million people living in coastal areas by 2050", Friends of the Earth's deputy director of economic policy Karen Orenstein said.
"We will continue to work with our global partners to enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change and prepare for and respond to natural disasters", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement in which he announced the start of the formal withdrawal process.
Asked about Trump's messaging on climate, his campaign spokesperson Sarah Matthews bashed Democrats and proposals for a Green New Deal, and said that Trump "continues to advance realistic solutions to reduce emissions while unleashing American energy like never before".
Democrats have demanded that she recuse herself from business related to the Paris Agreement (E&E News PM, 1 November). Not only is the US the largest historic contributor of atmospheric carbon emissions, it is the country that helped shape the approach that broke the logjam between the developed and developing nations to pave the way for the treaty.
The AIA and many among the architectural community, in general, aim to solve the climate crisis by promoting healthy building design and reducing carbon waste during and after construction.
The IPCC has previously admitted that climate models can't be used to accurately predict long-term changes in the climate.
The decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement has been widely slammed and is set to isolate the USA even further. "In climate research and modeling, we should recognise that we are dealing with a coupled non-linear chaotic system, and therefore that the long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible", the IPCC's 2018 report stated.
