Downtown Missoula draws crowds during Small Business Saturday

Shopping small also gives people the chance to explore old and new business in downtown Springfield.

Store manager Kirbay Preuss said small businesses like hers bring personality to communities.

"They come into the community, they provide the jobs, they provide the gifts, the donations, the support for the schools and the athletic teams and all those kind of things", Nick said.

She says people were lined up before doors opened.

"Right now we've got the 1, 2, 3 sales inspired by our address 123 West 10th Street so all books are either $1, $2 or $3 right now", Lidster said. "We have so many independently operated businesses".

American Express says that for every dollar spent at a small business, 67 cents stays within that community. "We can keep the profits in our small community which is so important to stimulate local economy".

"I think it's been growing ever since I came here", Russo said.
