Wall Street's main indexes hit record highs on Thursday following news that the United States had reached a "deal in principle" with China to resolve a trade war that has rattled markets for almost two years. The sector is one of the most sensitive to swings in trade because numerous companies rely on China for sales and supply chains. The administration has reached out to allies on Capitol Hill and in the business community to issue statements of support once the announcement is made, they said.
Critics say striking a deal now negates the previous year and a half of pressure on China to reform practices that give its businesses an unfair advantage.
That Trump appears ready to offer tariff relief in return has agitated China hawks in Washington who fear that after daring to take on Beijing in a way no prior president has with his tariffs, Trump is giving up leverage that might extract future concessions.
The statement comes just days before the U.S. is due to impose another round of tariffs on Chinese goods.
"While the Chinese spoke, Trump took to Twitter to characterize the phase one deal as "very large" but said the "25% Tariffs will remain as is".
If China fails to comply, the tariffs would revert to the original level.
"His words do not make sense, and we feel no goodwill from the U.S.", Hua said.
Experts say Beijing is just as eager to resolve the trade deal. Some experts say it's possible that talks may be suspended altogether until after the USA presidential election in November 2020.
