Authorities found the bodies of two young children in central Arizona after a vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross a runoff-swollen creek.
A 48-year-old man died in a separate incident near Sedgewickville, Missouri, and a storm-related death has also been reported in South Dakota.
Almost two feet of snow blanketed Duluth, Minnesota, on December 1, setting a record for the ninth highest two-day snow total in the city, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. "High winds are expected, and Blizzard Warnings are in effect for parts of the Northern/Central Plains".
With this blast of winter weather, New York City officials have declared a "Code Blue".
Farther south, rain and thunderstorms are forecast along and ahead of the cold front, with locally heavy rainfall possible Saturday in parts of the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys.
