Tolkien, who was born in Leeds in 1924, was the third and youngest son of the revered fantasy author and his wife Edith.
After serving with the RAF in South Africa during the war, Tolkien went up to Trinity College, Oxford, following in his father's footsteps to become a lecturer in Old and Middle English.
Glasgow University Tolkien scholar Dr Dimitra Fimi said: 'He gave us a window into Tolkien's creative process, and he provided scholarly commentary that enriched our understanding of Middle-earth. As he grew up, Christopher showed a great interest in his father's work, eventually going on to edit and publish his unpublished material, including "The Silmarillion" in 1977 and "The Fall of Gondolin" in 2018.
"Millions of people around the world will be forever grateful to Christopher for bringing us 'The Silmarillion, ' 'The Children of Húrin,' 'The History of Middle-earth' series and many others".
He signed off his work as "CJRT", going by his full name Christopher John Reuel Tolkien, in the same manner as his father.

"From editing "The Silmarillion" to the mammoth task of giving us the "History of Middle-earth" series, he revealed his father's grand vision of a rich and complex mythology".

He also took issue with Peter Jackson's critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings adaptation, telling French newspaper Le Monde in 2012 that the book had been "gutted" to make "an action film for 15 to 25-year-olds".

The renowned author and editor's passing was announced on Thursday by the Tolkien Society, one of many institutions established in his father's honor.
