Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations arm, was killed in a U.S. drone strike outside Baghdad airport on Friday, ratcheting up tensions between the arch-foes.
Soleimani's burial has been delayed, as officials have grown concerned about the large crowds that may attend.
In Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani warned Mr Trump to "never threaten" Iran, after the United States leader issued a U.S. strike list of 52 targets in the Islamic republic. "It's not the United States of America, it's the ayatollah", Pompeo said at a State Department press conference, referring to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Pentagon accused Soleimani of plotting an earlier embassy attack in Iraq and planning to carry out attacks on United States diplomats and service members in Iraq and the region. On the US side, the Pentagon has been moving thousands of additional forces into the region, including roughly 3,500 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division.
The drawdown of German troops was ordered by the USA -led joint command for fighting Islamic State, the German government said.
The tragedy came as grieving crowds packed the hometown of Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani, a hugely popular figure in the Islamic republic.
When viewed in context, however, President Trump's decision to take out the Iranian equivalent of the Chair of the Joint Chiefs and Secretary of Defense all rolled into one, and to do so on Iraqi soil was reckless and ill-advised. He was a key figure in orchestrating Iran's long-standing campaign to drive USA forces out of Iraq.
