Blaney dived down to the inside of the track to try and make his way past but ended up hitting the rear of Newman, sending the 42-year-old's auto sideways and into the concrete barriers at high speed.
Hamlin won his second straight Daytona 500, while Chris Buescher finished third.
Newman was reportedly taken to Halifax Health center by ambulance.
Concerned about Newman's condition, Blaney reiterated that causing him to spin was unintentional. It was later revealed by NASCAR and Newman's team that the driver was in serious condition and had suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Today's accident occurred 19 years after Dale Earnhardt was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500 back in 2001.
Newman, who won the event on 2008, was taken to a local hospital and an update on his condition was issued almost two hours after the crash.
"Sometimes we come up with a conclusion and it may be better for that exact, specific scenario but it's important to evaluate it against all scenarios to make sure we're not creating a hazard somewhere else that we would be unaware of".

Speaking this morning, Mr Abel, from Oxfordshire, said: 'Don't you want the English people home? That only clarifies our point that this quarantine could be wrong and that we should have left.
"Praying for Ryan Newman, a great and fearless @NASCAR driver!"
"We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11".
Footage from the final lap shows Blaney attempt to overtake Newman for the lead of the race coming into the final turn.
Hamlin's win a year ago was a 1-2-3 sweep for Joe Gibbs Racing and kicked off a yearlong company celebration in which Gibbs drivers won a record 19 races and the Cup championship.
Hamlin has qualified for the NASCAR Playoffs 12 times.
He's the first back-to-back Daytona victor since Sterling Marlin in 1995.
