Following the decision, T-Mobile has announced that it is now working with Sprint on the final steps to complete their merger to create the "New T-Mobile", noting that the deal could close as early as April 2020. Those federal agencies did, but only after extracting some promises from T-Mobile and Sprint meant to alleviate concerns about reduced competition in the wireless space, should those two carriers merge. But a group of state attorneys general tried to block the deal, arguing that having one fewer phone company would mean higher cellphone bills.
Manhattan federal Judge Victor Marrero rejected arguments from a coalition of states led by NY and California that the merger would hurt competition in the cellular industry and force consumers to pay higher prices.
But New York Attorney General Letitia James slammed the ruling and said the states are reviewing their options - including a possible appeal. (NYSE: T), which has about 140 million.
T-Mobile and Sprint haven't renewed the merger agreement since it lapsed on November 1.
Why it matters: The move creates a much larger rival to AT&T and Verizon and was seen as vital for Sprint, which has continued to lose market share during the deal's long approval process. But on February 11 a US federal judge ruled in favor of letting the merger proceed.
Hopes crisis nearly over as rains forecast to douse more Australia wildfires
James Jackson, the president of NSW Farmers, told Reuters : "This one event won't replenish the whole soil moisture profile". Nearly 400 millimetres (15.8 inches) of rain fell in the Sydney area and surrounding areas.
Under the settlement, Dish will be able to access T-Mobile's network for seven years as DIsh builds out its own 5G network. "Sprint has no alternative but to take whatever DT and T-Mobile offers them", he said.
Pai said T-Mobile has committed to bringing 5G to "97% of our nation's population within three years and 99% of Americans within six years", especially in rural areas.
It's therefore not surprising to hear rumors of a renegotiation possibly taking place in the eleventh hour, with T-Mobile most likely pursuing a significant price cut. Dish is also required to build a 5G network over the next several years. The new Dish wireless network will start life with about 9 million subscribers.
Dish says it will offer service to 70% of the USA population by 2023.
The states had said that Dish wasn't certain to succeed as a wireless company and was far smaller than Sprint, and the resulting wireless market would still be worse for consumers.
Some analysts have said that Dish has potential as a viable competitor, but a big question is when. We've said it all along: the New T-Mobile will be a supercharged Un-carrier that is great for consumers and great for competition. Even if it meets the 2023 government-imposed deadline, it still won't reach as many potential customers as Sprint's current-generation 4G network does today.
