"I submit to you on behalf of the House of Representatives that your duty demands that you convict President Trump", Democratic Representative Jason Crow told the 100-member Republican-controlled Senate, which is due to vote on Wednesday on whether to remove Trump from office.
Senators acknowledge the House Democratic managers have essentially proven their case, that Trump abused power and obstructed Congress, by leveraging US military aid to push Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden to thwart the 2020 election.
"What the president did was wrong", Manchin said in a speech on the Senate floor. "What the House Democrats have done to this nation, to the Constitution, to the office of the president, to the president himself and to this body (the Senate) is outrageous". He accused Democrats of trying to take away the public's ability to choose the USA president.
Alexander said, however, there was no need for more evidence and, with Washington awaiting the results of Monday's Iowa caucuses, it was better to let the American public decide who should be the next president.
"That is neither freedom, nor is it justice", Starr said.
As the Democratic prosecutors addressed the somber Senate chamber, Trump lashed out on Twitter.

The vote was divided across the party-line, as was expected, with Democrats getting only two of the four needed Republicans to side with them on the matter.

Pelosi accused Trump of soliciting foreign power to meddle United States policy in a bid to undermine what some believe to be his main political rival in the upcoming presidential election, former Vice President Joe Biden. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg also led Trump.
"History will not be kind to Donald Trump", Schiff told the Senate.
Trump's team has argued for weeks that the impeachment process seeks to rob American voters of a choice in 2020.
On Friday, just two Republican senators - Mitt Romney of Utah and Susan Collins of ME - joined Democrats in voting to introduce witnesses into the impeachment trial.
The Senate is to vote at 4:00 pm (2100 GMT) on Wednesday on the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress and the Republican president is all but certain of being acquitted. But any Republican defections would hurt Trump politically.
