The employee is now in quarantine.
The infected employee, who is based in the company's Brazil office at Ninth Avenue and Republican Street in South Lake Union, went home "feeling unwell" on February 25 and has not returned to the office building since, the email circulated to Amazon employees said. The company said it defined close contact as "closer than 6ft/2 meters over a prolonged period of time".
Washingon state-one of the states most impacted by the virus so far-has confirmed 27 cases and nine deaths as of Tuesday.
"We're supporting the affected employee who is in quarantine", an Amazon spokesperson told Fox News.

Amazon advised its employees who are experiencing symptoms associated with the novel coronavirus to remain at home and seek medical attention. Amazon assured staff it is "continuing with enhancing cleaning and sanitization in the office".
Amazon has an internal website updated regularly that includes information related to the coronavirus for its employees.
It is unknown if the employee is among those counted in the official total.
Although this is the first case of an Amazon US employee contracting the illness, two Italian workers have been struck ill, as reports of the virus continue to surface across Europe. Amazon has also announced that it would conduct some of its recruiting interviews by video, instead of in-person. The company also placed restrictions on its employees from traveling to and from China in January.
It was not immediately clear how the employee contracted the virus. Google canceled its annual I/O developer conference scheduled for May, and Facebook and Twitter have pulled out of the South By Southwest tech conference in Austin later this month, canceling all employee appearances on panels.
