As six U.S. states went to the polls to select their Democratic candidate for the 2020 presidential elections, front-runners Biden and Sanders faced each other in a race for over 350 delegates.
Sanders suggested the Democratic Party would benefit from being more responsive to the concerns of younger people who backed his platform.
"Trump must be defeated, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens", Sanders said. Sanders narrowly carried the Midwestern battleground in an upset victory against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016 despite polling being behind in the polls by 16 percent.
Former Vice President Joe Biden has captured another first-place victory in the south with a top finish in MS, the Associated Press projects. President Trump, of course, chimes in on the election results via Twitter. "I can not tell you how many people our campaign has spoke to and said, and I quote, 'I like what your campaign stands for, I agree with what your campaign stands for, but I'm going to vote for Joe Biden because I think Joe is the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump, '" Sanders said.
Biden's southern victories are largely a result of the former vice president's strong support among black voters, who brought new life into his flailing campaign following a game-changing first-place finish in SC marking Biden's first presidential primary win after three prior runs for the White House.
"The process of unity isn't just this pie-in-the-sky, vague, butterflies-in-your-tummy type of feeling", New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of Sanders' highest-profile supporters, said Wednesday in an interview on Capitol Hill.
Sen. Mitt Romney will back Burisma/Biden probe
Romney's support for the subpoena is significant, since he was the sole Republican senator to vote to convict Mr. Mitt Romney won't stand in the way of a Senate committee subpoena.
The Vermont senator offered no further details on what his campaign may look like before or after he and Biden - the last two major candidates left in the Democratic presidential nomination - spar Sunday night on stage in Arizona.
By fighting on, Sanders will get the face-off with Biden that he has long desired.
He cautioned Democratic leaders against ignoring the issues favoured by those young voters.
His decision, though, was greeted happily by some leading progressives, who echoed Sanders' focus on Biden's struggles with younger voters. Should Sanders get out soon, he could save Democrats months of a messy and expensive primary fight. "A debate between Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden really, really matters, especially at a time when that key demographic shouldn't be dismissed. We deserve to hear that contrast and continue the contest".
Sanders is scheduled to appear on NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Wednesday. He said "poll after poll" shows a majority of Americans support elements of his agenda, including universal health care, free public education, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, ending "mass incarceration", overhauling the immigration system and mounting aggressive efforts to combat the "existential threat" of climate change. But he said he's looking forward to a debate scheduled Sunday with Biden. He pledged his organisation would do "everything we can to help him defeat Donald Trump in November".
