Santa Clara County Health officials confirmed on Friday the second coronavirus case of "unknown origin" in a patient who had not come in contact with any known travellers in California or went overseas.
"We are actively working with the CDC, with local governments, health facilities, and health care providers across the state to respond as new cases are identified", said Dr. Sonia Angell, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Health Officer.
The King County patient is believed to have contracted the virus from "community spread", not travel, officials said.
"This is what we have been preparing for".
Officials say the origin of the infection is still unknown, and are treating it as a likely case of "community spread".
The woman was hospitalised with a respiratory illness and local investigators conducted the test to diagnose the virus.
Cody said the newly confirmed case in Santa Clara County is not linked to two previous cases in that county, nor to others in the state.
"We will continue to work toward a day where no one dies from this virus", the governor said.
CDC has also broadened the number of people eligible for testing, in response to similar concerns.
Both patients weren't seriously ill.

In the Solano case, authorities are searching for people who may have come into contact with the infected woman.
