Tokyo is supposed to host the 2020 Olympics from July 24 to August 9.
"World Athletics welcomes discussions with the IOC to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and has written to the IOC to share this feedback from the sport", the governing body said in a statement to AW.
"It will come in stages", Pound said of the rescheduling process.
The 58-year-old American - a nine-time Olympic champion - told Houston television station KRIV that he backed the calls for postponement by USA Track and Field and USA Swimming due to disruptions caused by the pandemic.
He said he had conveyed his views to Tokyo Games chief Yoshiro Mori on Sunday evening, who then discussed the issue with IOC President Thomas Bach.
"The Canadian Olympic Committee [COC] and Canadian Paralympic Committee [CPC], backed by their athletes' commissions, national sports organisations and the government of Canada, have made the hard decision to not send Canadian teams to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2020", a statement read.
Gas Price Drops Below A Dollar At One Gas Station
Tuesday, the average US gasoline price dropped to $2.24, which is down by 20 cents from a month ago, according to Breitbart News. Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee have at least one gas station selling gas for under $1.30 a gallon.
Pound explained that the IOC's announcement, as well as details of its future plans, will soon follow.
Next steps, says Pound, will be announced in waves as the International Olympic Committee begins to "deal with all the ramifications of moving this", which he describes as "immense".
Pound's revelation comes 24 hours after International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach admitted that postponement was a realistic outcome. And with training schedules and qualification events ripped up in countries all around the world, Canada and Australia became the first to withdraw their athletes from the Games entirely.
Canada sent more than 300 athletes to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and took home 22 medals.
"Although it's a devastating prospect for the Games to be postponed, it is the correct decision, as we must focus on our families and our communities at this challenging time".
