Hopes that the Tour de France could start in Nice on 29 August appear to have been brought to an end with the country's Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirming this afternoon that no team sports events can be held until September at the earliest.
"The 2019-2020 season of professional sports, especially that of football, will not be able to resume", said Philippe while announcing France's plans to exit confinement.
There is yet to be an official statement from the French Football Federation but Philippe's update will be critical to Ligue Un after UEFA gave its members a deadline of May 25 to provide plans to restart their respective seasons. The 2020/21 season had been due to begin in August.
Defending champions Paris St-Germain are now 12 points clear of Marseille at the top of Ligue 1, with 10 rounds of matches and one outstanding fixture left to play. The first is to take the current standings as they are after 27 games. The measure is meant to ensure that there is no rush and that the health of the players is taken into account. That throws up a subsequent problem; not all the teams have met twice. Rennes, a point ahead of Lille in third, now holds the third Champions League spot.
When football resumes in September they will head straight into the 2020/21 season with no clubs being made to catch up on fixtures.
Researchers race to find a vaccine for COVID-19
Half will receive the Covid-19 vaccine, also half a control vaccine which protects against meningitis but not coronavirus. Some may work more effectively than others in groups like children or older people, or at different costs and dosages.
What about the Champions League?
France have become the third big European league to cut short their season.
The club are ready to play their home matches in other countries, said Al-Khelaifi, with PSG still waiting to learn who they will face in the quarter-finals of the competition.
"With the agreement of UEFA, we intend to participate in the final phase of the Champions League", Nasser said, "If it is not possible to play in France, we will play our matches overseas". "If it is not possible to play in France, we will play our matches overseas while ensuring better health security conditions for our players and all our staff", said the president of PSG in a press release.
