"When you limit hiring to people who either live in a small number of big cities or are willing to move there, that cuts out a lot of people who live in different communities, different backgrounds or may have different perspectives", said Zuckerberg.
"Does that mean I could apply for a job in Silicon Valley and work remotely from, say, the Caribbean?"
The company has said workers will be able to work from home at least through the end of the year.
"I think Facebook will be the most forward-leaning company on remote work at our scale, and we've been working on a thoughtful and responsible plan to do this.", wrote Zuckerberg on Facebook. Its decision is likely to have a pronounced impact on the San Francisco area, where the tech sector's rapid growth has strained regional infrastructure.
In a further indication of the emerging new thinking, Facebook is also going to "aggressively" start hiring remote employees since they won't be as tied to physical office space - particularly for senior-level personnel. "We want to focus the recruiting energy in some cities where we can get to hundreds of engineers". The company will adjust employees' salaries depending on where they live, he said.
Interestingly, cost savings aren't what's motivating the changes. The latter is even considering a permanent work from the home set-up.

The sky-high compensation packages common in Silicon Valley will not necessarily be transferred to other parts of the country, however.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement in a company meeting that was livestreamed on his Facebook page.
"We pay very well, basically at the top of the market, but we pay a market rate".
"Over time, we expect most of our workforce to be spread across large parts of the USA and beyond", vice president of people Lori Goler said in a Facebook post.
That includes recruiting talented staff who don't live near a current Facebook office; retaining employees who want to move; and improving the diversity of its workforce.
The company, one of Silicon Valley's biggest employers, is giving US staffers who are approved to work remotely until January 1, 2021 to update the company on where they plan to base themselves, at which point their salaries will be adjusted to reflect the local cost of living.
