The gatherings, while boisterous at times, were for the most part orderly, in contrast to several previous nights punctuated by sporadic arson, looting and clashes between protesters and police. The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a fierce eulogy for Floyd.
"They're still within a culture and system created to serve and protect white people from black people. and to protect officers in blue from repercussions", he said.
"George, he was like a general", brother Philonise Floyd said. "He died of a common American criminal justice malfunction", the famed activist told attendees, noting that no one in that room had originally planned to be at a funeral on that day. "It's time for us to stand up in George's name and say, 'Get your knee off our necks'".
Derek Chauvin, the police officer who pinned his knee onto Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes and charged with second-degree murder, is due in court on Monday.
While the memorial was invite-only, thousands of people gathered not far from the site it was held, listening intently to the service on loudspeakers.
The service - the first in a series of memorials set for three cities over six days - unfolded in Minneapolis at a sanctuary at North Central University as a judge a few blocks away set bail at $750,000 each for the three fired police officers charged with aiding and abetting murder in Floyd's death. "Every day he would walk outside there would be a line of people wanting to greet him..."
The memorial included scripture, inspiring messages of hope even in the wake of social injustice, sweet memories of the late Floyd from his family, and uplifting gospel music performed in his honor. Elder said the chief was immersed in Floyd's memorial service Thursday and was unavailable for an interview.

Three former police officers involved in the death of George Floyd have been arraigned in Minnesota.
Floyd died May 25.
He urged the crowd to continue to seek justice but to avoid violence, saying, "My brother wasn't about that".
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio took the stage to pledge that Floyd's death would lead to substantive changes in police practices in the nation's largest city, and called for greater interracial empathy.
"We all saw what happened last week".
His wife, Chirlane McCray, who is black and is the mother of their two children, said Floyd's killing was a reminder of the fear that black families in the country endure on a daily basis. "We pray this prayer", he said, adding, "We march on until victory is won".
A string of memorial services for Floyd were expected to stretch across six days and three states, including memorials in North Carolina and Houston.
