The German man pinpointed this week as a suspect in the infamous 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann is also being looked at in a different unsolved disappearance of a young girl. They did not name him.
Police in Portugal and the United Kingdom confirmed the new lead in the long-running case.
Hans Christian Wolters, a prosecutor in Braunschweig, Germany, told reporters the man is being investigated on suspicion of murder.
On Thursday Mr Gamble said he was "more hopeful" than he had been in the last 13 years that the "jigsaw puzzle" of the case was coming together, though it did appear that German police were now certain that Madeleine was dead.
Kate and Gerry McCann are not doing interviews as they want the focus to remain on the police's request for information around the phone numbers and cars used by this new suspect, Mitchell added.
"All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice", the couple, who live in the United Kingdom, wrote. "We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know as we need to find peace".
The man is described as white with short blonde hair and a height of approximately 6ft (1.8m), with a slim build at the time of the alleged murder.
Her parents say Madeleine disappeared after they had left her and her twin siblings asleep in their holiday complex while they had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant. He said whoever abducted the girl may have broken into the holiday apartment and then spontaneously committed the kidnapping.
The suspect had lived in Portugal's Algarve region from 1995 to 2007, and also resided in a house in Praia de Luz, the resort town from which McCann disappeared, according to the Braunschweig prosecutor's office.

Brueckner is now in prison for his most serious crime - the rape of an elderly American tourist, who he attacked in Portugal in 2005, two years before McCann went missing.
The newspaper said the physical description provided by German authorities and other details match the defendant in the 2005 rape attack, who recently was linked to the case by DNA.
The suspect denied the charges during the trial and the verdict is now being appealed.
Yesterday, German and British police appealed for information about the 43-year-old suspect, a convicted pedophile who is now in a German prison serving a sentence for sexual offences.
German magazine Der Spiegel reported that he was extradited from Portugal in 2017 and initially convicted of drug trafficking.
"They wait to hear any developments from police".
Prosecutors believe she is dead and German authorities are treating her disappearance as a murder investigation.
Portuguese police declined to comment because the country's judicial secrecy law forbids revealing details of open investigations. "We believe he was living in this van for days, possibly weeks, and may have been using it on 3 May 2007".
"I think for parents, even if disgusting, at least they know and they can find closure", she told Reuters not far from the resort complex where Madeleine disappeared.
