It's still too soon to say if or when the storm will affect the United States, but the National Weather Service urged those along the Gulf Coast to review their hurricane season preparedness plans just in case.
As of the 4 p.m. update, Tropical Depression Three was located near latitude 19.6 North, longitude 91.2 West. Its wind speed would have to increase to at least 74 miles per hour to be classified a hurricane.
Gradual strengthening is expected during the next couple of days and the depression is forecast to become a tropical storm tonight or Tuesday.
In reaching tropical storm status, Cristobal marks the fastest start to the hurricane season since 1851, breaking a record set by Tropical Storm Colin on June 5, Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher with Colorado State University, said on Twitter. The chance for hit or miss storms and showers will continue into the weekend.

The current forecast, which spans the next five days, does not show impacts to the US within that five days. So are in 2020, Arthur and Bertha have already formed.
