Jacksonville's mayor scored a major political coup this week: President Trump will deliver his August 27 convention speech in the Florida city after a dispute over coronavirus-related crowd restrictions led him to mostly abandon North Carolina, where the Republican convention was originally planned. McDaniel said Wednesday that Jacksonville is "absolutely in the frontrunning position" to host the celebration for the Republican convention.
"We are thrilled to celebrate this momentous occasion in the great city of Jacksonville", McDaniel said. "We look forward to bringing this great celebration and an economic boom to the Sunshine State in just a few short months". The event will take place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. More details are forthcoming, per the release.
Because the party signed a contract to hold the convention in Charlotte, they are obligated to hold some portion of the convention in the North Carolina city. DeSantis said in a statement that he was "honored" to host the convention.
"Would have showcased handsome North Carolina to the World, and brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, and jobs for the State", the Republican president said, but they would look elsewhere due to Cooper's refusal "to guarantee that we can have use of the Spectrum Arena".
The change of location for the speeches and pageantry comes after North Carolina Democratic Governor Roy Cooper said he could not authorize the convention to go ahead as planned due to concerns about mass gatherings during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Trump changed his home address from Manhattan to Palm Beach, Fla. a year ago.
Jobless claims: Another 1.54 million Americans file for unemployment benefits
However, the figure is projected to be down slightly on the 1.88 million claims filed in the previous week. The report will follow last Friday's news of a surprise 2.5 million increase in nonfarm payrolls in May.
As McDaniel told Gray Television Washington Bureau Chief Jacqueline Policastro in an exclusive interview last week, the party plans to keep the "official business" of the Republican National Convention in its original host city, Charlotte, N.C.
The Jacksonville area has a population of about 1.5 million.
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry, the former chairman of the Florida Republicans and one of the few big city Republican mayors, pitched his city as the next convention host on Twitter last week and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who talks to the President regularly, told Fox this month that the state was ready to host the event.
Despite a rise in coronavirus cases in recent weeks in Florida, the state's Republican governor was eager to have the president accept the GOP nomination in the same state where Trump is registered to vote.
'Jacksonville is a great city that will showcase Florida´s energy, facilities, entrepreneurship and commitment to bring together the delegates of the Republican Party at a historic time in our nation´s history'.
'The opportunity to highlight all our city has to offer and the tremendous economic impact is one I enthusiastically welcome, and we look forward to hosting an exciting event for all delegates and guests to enjoy, ' Curry said in a statement provided by the RNC. The stretch of northeastern Florida is deep red Trump country, where the campaign believes they can expand their margins to help win Florida, which is crucial in building a path to 270 electoral votes.
