On Wednesday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced their scheduling plan for the 2020 football season. A report by Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, however, said the SEC athletic directors have discussed a 10-game conference schedule that would not include out-of-conference games.
According to the announcement, the non-conference matchup "must take place in the home state of the ACC institution, and all nonconference opponents must have met the medical protocol requirements as agreed upon by the ACC during the coronavirus pandemic" (via ESPN). The move to a 10-game conference-only schedule eliminates marquee non-conference games like LSU-Texas, Oklahoma-Tennessee and Auburn-North Carolina.
That could strain the relationship with the ACC. Coaches from other programs within the conference likely would bristle at the idea of being used, and Notre Dame would be called out to join a conference even more than ever across the Power 5.
The good news for Wolfpack fans is that path to a higher winning percentage will be a lot easier without Clemson and Notre Dame on the schedule. Additional games against conference or nonconference opponents would be left up to the schools, though they wouldn't count in the ACC standings.
