Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said during a Senate hearing Tuesday that he was "very disturbed" by the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and said it's conceivable that the US could see as many as 100,000 new infections a day should trends continue.
"It's extremely important to have safe and effective vaccines available for everyone in this country", Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a U.S. Senate committee.
"I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around, and so I am very concerned", Fauci said.
"We're not in the situation of New Zealand or Singapore or Korea where a new case is rapidly identified and all the contacts are traced and people are isolated who are sick and people who are exposed are quarantined and they can keep things under control", Dr Schuchat said in an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association on Monday. Fauci said about half of the new nationwide COVID-19 cases are coming from four states: California, Texas, Florida and Arizona. Fauci said he has observed in video clips and photos that people, particularly younger people, are gathering at bars, not wearing masks, and not social distancing.
The nation's top infectious-disease expert gave the warning in response to questioning from Sen. "I will guarantee you that, because when you have an outbreak in one part of the country, even though in other parts of the country they're doing well, they are vulnerable ..."
The hearing took place as Republican governors of newly hard hit states, including Texas and Florida, have been rescinding reopening plans in the face of surging cases of he virus that has killed at least 124,000 people in the US since February.
