As of Thursday, the National Hurricane Center had given a weather system - now located roughly 50 miles east off the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina - an 80% chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical storm.
Spaghetti models are in general agreement that Invest 98L will move parallel to the coasts of North Carolina, Delaware, and New Jersey before heading towards Long Island, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 11 p.m. advisory that Fay was moving toward the north at about 13 kph but was expected to have a faster forward speed over the next couple of days.

According to forecasters, Fay will undergo slight strengthening into Friday before the center moves inland and weakens as the storm moves north.
Gusty winds are possible as well, according to the hurricane center.
The storm will continue to crawl up the coast, impacting the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Forecasters say the storm is moving north and east along the Atlantic coast, and they expect the system to track very close to the Jersey Shore by early Friday morning - lashing New Jersey with heavy rain, rough surf, 30 to 35 miles per hour winds, and gusts as strong as 45 miles per hour or higher.
Strong, potentially damaging winds will lash the coast; the strongest are expected at the immediate Jersey Shore and South Shore of Long Island.
